Counts of the people strictly between two suspects in the same row or column — never including the two ends.

★ the speaker; highlighted cards are the ones the clue talks about.
There are exactly two criminals between Bea and Ruth.

A between clue names two suspects who share a row or a column and counts the people strictly between them. The two named suspects are never part of the count. If Bea is in A1 and Ruth in D1, "between Bea and Ruth" means B1 and C1.

How to read it

How it combines with other clues

Between clues split a line into an inside and an outside. A row count then tells you about the outside. Two between clues on the same line that overlap tell you about the overlap, and that is often where a hard step hides.
