What happened

The 'deceased' was Viktor Hale, an art thief who had broken out of prison in Lyon two days earlier. Hattie, a doctor travelling on the train, signed his death certificate in a Paris café; Greta, a diplomat, stamped the coffin through as a diplomatic repatriation so no border guard could open it. Ned and Leo, the conductors, kept the luggage van locked and the corridor clear, and Jasper, an engineer, drilled breathing holes beneath the brass handles. Mila played her violin in the dining car loudly enough to cover a coffin lid opening at three in the morning. Viktor was arrested in Vienna while asking for the bill.
