About this case
The Goldmoor Gold Cup ended in a photo finish, and the judges' photograph showed Copper Lane winning by a nostril. Three days later a spectator's video, shot from nearly the same angle, showed the other horse a full head in front.
This Medium case seats 20 suspects on a 4×5 grid. 16 of them carry a clue; the other 4 only have something to say about themselves. 2 of the steps can only be proven by reading two or more clues together.
Nudge 1 — where to start
The case opens with Ada the trainer (A1) already proven. Their statement is enough on its own to prove one more suspect straight away — read it word by word, especially the counting words (exactly, neighbors, between).
Nobody between me and Dev is a criminal.— Ada, trainer (A1)
Spoiler: who can I prove first?
Basil (B1) is innocent, proven by Ada’s statement.
Nudge 2 — the opening
Five suspects get proven in this stretch, in rows 1 and 2. The statements doing the work are “between” clues, direction clues and shared-neighbor counts. Every step in this stretch needs just one statement. Tip: with “between” clues, two suspects side by side have nobody between them, so watch for empty stretches.
Spoiler: whose statement to read
Ada’s statement.
Spoiler: which suspect does that settle?
Basil (B1) — innocent.
Nudge 3 — after about 5 proven suspects
Five suspects get proven in this stretch, in rows 2 and 3. The statements doing the work are neighbor counts, paired verdicts and if–then clues. Every step in this stretch needs just one statement. Tip: with neighbor counts, treat the number as a budget — once enough of the ring is proven, the rest is forced.
Spoiler: whose statement to read
Dev’s statement.
Spoiler: which suspect does that settle?
Greta (C2) — a criminal.
Nudge 4 — after about 10 proven suspects
Four suspects get proven in this stretch, in rows 4 and 5. The statements doing the work are neighbor counts, role counts and if–then clues. One step here needs 2 statements read together. Tip: with role counts, roles count everyone in the role wherever they stand, so check the whole board.
Spoiler: whose statements to read
Kira’s and Percy’s statements, read together.
Spoiler: which suspect does that settle?
Suki (C5) — innocent.
Nudge 5 — the endgame
Five suspects get proven in this stretch, across rows 3, 4 and 5, most of them in row 5. The statements doing the work are neighbor counts, odd/even clues and corner and edge counts. One step here needs 2 statements read together. Tip: with odd/even clues, zero is even, and with one unknown left the parity settles it.
Spoiler: whose statements to read
Mabel’s and Suki’s statements, read together.
Spoiler: which suspect does that settle?
Otto (C4) — a criminal.
The hardest step
The toughest moment needs 2 statements at once. If you’re stuck in the middle of the case, this is probably it.
Spoiler: the statements for the hardest step
Read Kira’s and Percy’s statements together. They settle Suki.
